Gustar  (revision)     (ditto all impersonal verbs such as interesar..faltar  hace falta .. doler  ..encantar etc)

 

1. I like wine = wine pleases me      me gusta vino

2. He likes me = I am pleasing to him    le gusto

3. We liked going to the beach = going to the beach was pleasing to us (a verb takes the 3rd person sing of the verb)  nos gustaba ir a la playa

4. My parents like monuments = to my parents monuments  please them                 a mis padres les gustan monumentos

5. John likes tennis = to John tennis pleases him  a Juan le gusta tenis

6. He liked the film = the film pleased him      le gustaba (gustó) la película

 

​You can add the prepositional pronouns on for stress or emphasis:

me gusta a mí vino     a elle le gustan pinturas

It can go before or after BUT it can never be used without main pronoun.
