Present Participle (Le Participe Présent)
The Present Participle is formed by removing “ons” from the present tense “nous” form and adding “ant”. It translates “By …on ……while (do)ing” something”. The irregular forms are étant (être), ayant (avoir) and sachant (savoir). Verbs with an infinitive “ger” ending retain the “e” eg. mangeant, rangeant……Don’t confuse with other words ending “ant” which are not verbs. eg. un aimant = a magnet, un savant = a clever person, arrogant = arrogant (adjective) etc Try the exercise below:
